The biodiversity focal area focuses on improving the sustainability of protected area systems and mainstreaming biodiversity conservation and sustainable use into production landscapes/seascapes and sectors. SGP projects tackle threats to globally significant biodiversity in all types of ecosystems: arid and semi-arid, coastal and marine, freshwaters and wetlands, forests and mountains.
As an effective approach to conserving biodiversity, SGP has concentrated its efforts on protected areas and indigenous and community conserved areas (ICCAs). The sustainable use of biodiversity-based products is also addressed, targeting sustainable biodiversity-friendly practices in activities that depend on biodiversity resources, such as agriculture, fisheries, forestry, and tourism. Support is also provided for the equitable sharing of benefits derived from the use of biological resources, as well as respect for and preservation of traditional knowledge.
A typical Biodiversity project is funded if it answers “Yes” to some of the following questions.
- Is the ecosystem or constituent species threatened or at risk?
- Is it a "hot spot" (areas under threat that have exceptional concentrations of species unique to the area)?
- Is there a significant presence of endemic species?
- Is the site rich in species?
- Does it contain habitats that are important to migratory species?
- Does it fall under international treaties, laws, agreements or conventions, such as the Convention on International Trade in End?
