Capacity Development

Capacity Development is a cross-cutting focal area that promotes further synergies among focal areas. The goal of the Capacity Development focal area is to enhance and strengthen the capacity of communities and civil society to address global environmental challenges. All SGP projects include a capacity development component. Standalone capacity development projects also receive support, focusing on larger groups of community and CSO stakeholders. These standalone capacity development grants can be used, for example, for the organization of knowledge fairs to showcase the achievements of a country programme; or stakeholder workshops aimed at strengthening capacities for monitoring and evaluation, applying knowledge management and capturing lessons learned, and networking for policy advocacy and effective participation in national planning.

Capacity development in regular SGP projects

Capacity development and learning underpin all SGP activities. An integral understanding of how local communities manage change combined with innovative approaches to capacity development — at all levels and among a broad spectrum of grantees and partner organizations — have proven critical to achieving environmental and sustainability goals.
